Bosch brake pads are constantly optimized at their limit of performance. Over and over again, Bosch brake pads prove their resilience and durability at extensive tests measuring the braking performance under sometimes quite extreme conditions.
These tests are always based on OE values and tougher than required by the ECE R90 trade admission. While ECE R90 tests shear strength, pressure and speed sensitivity as well as temperature change resistance, the requirements Bosch tests place on brake pads are even tougher: Temperature sensitivity, decrease in brake efficiency (fading), thermal conductivity, brake vibration, acoustic behavior as well as wear of both brake pads and discs are analyzed and evaluated meticulously.
High standards: AK Master test
As a common reference system including comparable performance specifications and standards, the brake manufacturers developed the AK Master test. At this performance test, the influences of velocity, pressure and temperature on the braking performance are analyzed on own dynamometers – measuring, at the same time, the brake pad’s friction coefficient and its bedding-in under different braking conditions and situations. Strains, fading and the subsequent recuperation are displayed on diagrams. In addition, the brake system pressure is also compared to the deceleration because of its influence on both pedal force and pedal travel. Besides the simulation of years of use and extreme braking situations, vehicle tests are also performed at the AK Master test. The alpine descent at Grossglockner is one of the routes where brake pads have to prove their durability.
Challenging: AMS and HAMS tests
Nowadays, car buyers rely on technical coverage and reports with practical comparison tests of safety-relevant vehicle technology for their purchase decisions. The AMS (Auto Motor und Sport) and the HAMS (High Speed
Auto Motor und Sport) tests are such special motor-press tests. At these tests, braking under extreme driving situations – including high speeds – is simulated. At 10 subsequent emergency- braking procedures, friction coefficient, fading and the evolvement of the pedal force are determined.
Once the test procedure has been finished, the brake pads are subject to a stringent visual inspection.
